Many service records can be requested electronically through their website as long as the veteran or next of kin has their social security number, service number, dates of service, along with other basic information. How Did Records Get Destroyed?
Some guns have been used in civil crimes, recovered from criminals, or sold to a street gang. By digging further, you can find service records that include any medals or awards the person received. You can also search military records by conflict served or time period.
Searches spanning unit or event are also available. Investigators suspect the shells came from Camp Shelby, an Army National Guard base about 40 miles away. Mississippi National Guard spokeswoman Lt. Col. Deidre Smith said she knew of no evidence that the shell came from there.

All this information is in the archives of the National Archives. However, you cannot simply ask the government to provide military records. Post-1957 discharge papers are not available to anyone except the veteran and immediate family members.
What Happens If The Nprc Cannot Find Military Records?
Ask the veteran you are interviewing to provide you with a copy of the DD 214. If it is lost, the National Archives will send you a replacement. You can also call the NPRC customer service line (this is a long distance call for most customers): 314-801-0800.

Many of these missing items are labeled theft, with troops falsifying records to cover them up. One such case involves a Marine demolitions specialist who steals 13 kilograms of C4 plastic explosive to prepare for a theoretical civil war.

Where To Get Military Records
No different than any other form of employment, it's common to fact check during the hiring process. This also applies to any qualifications or experience gained during the service. Not all missing explosives need to be reported to the military bureaucracy.
These gaps in reporting mean that official loss and theft figures compiled by the Office of the Secretary of Defense underestimate the full extent of the problem. For example, the services do not have to report the loss or theft of less than 10 pounds of C4 to the Pentagon, although each branch may have stricter internal regulations.
